Ok, I just got a 1999 ford escort with around 160,000 miles on it and it was driving fine when when the car suddenly wouldn’t go over 45mph. I then pulled over and white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. I got someone to bring it back to the house. It would turn over but not start and the service engine light was coming on. I changed the oil, put in new wires that go to the spark plugs, and a new battery. The car then started fine, but it would cut off while idling. I was told to just take it for a short test drive and it would be fine because some cars did that when a new battery has been put in. While on the test drive, the car just completely cut off without warning. Again when I tried to crank it, it would turn over but not start. No white smoke this time. It is currently on the side of the road, and if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.
1999 ford escort engine just cut off while driving. Help!!!!?

Was the engine light on during the test drive?
You need to find out what why the service light is on. It could be a cam or crank sensor. If those are bad the computer doesn’t know when to fire the spark plug.
Was the timing belt replace recently? It could be a coincident, but maybe the belt broke on the test drive.
If a timing belt stretches out, that;s just how it acts. Take the cover off and see if the timing marks ar still exactly lined up. If they are off, don’t line them up; change the belt.
ford escorts were infamous for blown head gaskets ( if you are talking about enough white smoke to blind the car behind you, but disappears quickly this is steam which means water, not fuel.) you need a good mechanic
