Sounds like the timing is way off. When was last time you changed the timing belt. Over time it stretches and the timing changes Change the timing belt and re set the timing.
You could have a fuel injector stuck open and dumping way too much fuel causing the unburnt fuel to build up in the exhaust system and backfire out the exhaust. If the popping is coming from the intake instead of the exhaust the timing might be advanced a little or the fuel injectors are not spraying enough fuel. Fuel vapors ignite faster than liquid gas so if there is not enough gas in the mixture it will burn to fast and cause a popping or pinging sound. It is also important to be sure that all of the wires are on the correct plugs and position on the cap. Also if the car is running hot it will cause the fuel to ignite just from the hot temperatures in the cylinders and can cause the same symptoms. Hope this helps you out. If you need more help you can contact me personally and i will try to help you out.
Hope I have been helpful.
